Iran reached the last eight of the 2011 Asian Cup before losing out to South Korea. Interim coach Alireza Mansourian, who has taken over the reins of the national squad from Afshin Ghotbi, has chosen to keep faith with the same 23 players who Ghotbi selected for the continental showpiece in Qatar. There is therefore no recall for veteran winger Ali Karimi, who recently signed for German giants Schalke 04.

Russia’s squad for this fixture is dominated by players from domestic giants Zenit St.Petersburg and CSKA Moscow. Thirteen of the twenty players in the squad either ply their trade for Zenit or CSKA, with three coming from Lokomotiv and Dynamo Moscow. The squad also contains the trio of Andrei Arshavin, Roman Pavlyuchenko and Diniyar Bilyaletdinov who play for clubs in the Premier League.
