Germany will look to take revenge on Italy for their 2006 World Cup semifinal defeat on home soil when they host the Azzurri in an international friendly in Dortmund on Wednesday. The Germans lost 2-0 to eventual champions Italy at Signal Iduna Park in 2006 in the semifinals. Coincidentally enough, Signal Iduna is the venue for this international fixture too. There are five players from home club Borussia Dortmund in German coach Joachim Low’s squad-Mario Goetze, Mats Hummels, Kevin Grosskreutz, Marcel Schmelzer and uncapped midfielder Sven Bender.

Low has however chosen not to recall talismanic midfielder Michael Ballack, who last played for the national team in March 2010. In Ballack’s absence, Philipp Lahm is expected to continue wearing the armband.

Germany have not beaten Italy in international competition for the last sixteen years. Italy coach Cesare Prandelli has said that both Gianluigi Buffon and Antonio Cassano could feature against the Germans but Mario Balotelli will not play due to his injury problems.
