The game is part of Borussia Monchengladbach’s 110^th anniversary celebrations. Gladbach were founded on 1^st August 1900. The club had a big rivalry with Liverpool in European competition in the 1970’s and regularly met in the knockout stages.

The Reds got the better of Gladbach in the finals of the 1973 UEFA Cup and the 1977 European Cup. Liverpool also beat Gladbach en route to their 1978 European Cup triumph. Liverpool were last seen in action against Rabotnicki Skopje in a Europa League qualifier.

Borussia Monchengladbach recently lifted the Herman Teeuwen Cup by beating VVV Venlo 2-1 in the Netherlands. The game, which saw US midfielder Michael Bradley make his first start of the season, saw Gladbach win 2-1 thanks to goals from Juan Arango and Karim Matmour. Both of Gladbach’s goals came after Michael Uchebo had opened the scoring for VVV midway through the first half.
