Villa have struggled for form before the start of the new season, winning just two of their five pre-season friendlies so far. Martin O’Neill has not yet made any new signings this summer though the speculation over a potential cash plus swap deal involving Stephen Ireland and James Milner refuses to die down.

While Milner has publicly announced that he wants to leave the club and join Manchester City, O’Neill is refusing to let his key player go away cheaply and is not willing to talk unless City increase their bid to over 30 million.

Meanwhile Benfica coach Jorge Jesus face a tough fight on hand if he is to keep the majority of his squad together. Angel Di Maria has already departed to Real Madrid while Fabio Coentrao, Ramires and David Luiz all attracting interest from various European clubs.
