Twente beat former UEFA Cup holders Zenit St.Petersburg in the Round of 16. Michel Preud’ home prevailed 3-0 in the first leg in Enschede thanks to a brace from Luuk de Jong. In the return leg, Zenit raced to a 2-0 lead by half time, but were unable to find the third goal that would have taken the tie to extra time.

Villarreal ended the hopes of Germany’s last remaining Europa League side Bayer Leverkusen in the Round of 16. Nilmar’s second half double allowed the Yellow Submarines to come away from the first leg with a 3-2 win. In the second leg at El Madrigal, Santi Cazorla and Giuseppe Rossi netted on either side of the interval as Villarreal prevailed 2-1.

Rossi is the highest scorer in this season’s Europa League with eight goals. This is the first ever meeting between Villarreal and Twente in the history of the two clubs.
