Current Trabzonspor coach Senol Gunes was the goalkeeper for the Turkish outfit when they played Liverpool in the 1976/77 European Champions Club Cup. The Black Sea Storm prevailed 1-0 at Hüseyin Avni Aker Stadium, with Cemil Usta scoring the only goal of the game. Gunes is currently in his fourth term as coach of Trabzonspor, who are the only team outside Istanbul to have won the Turkish League. Gunes won the title six times with Trabzonspor as a player.

Unfortunately for Trabzonspor, they lost the second leg 3-0 at Anfield and went on to lose the tie 3-1 on aggregate to Liverpool. The Reds went on to lift the European Cup that season- a fact that will not be forgotten by current manager Roy Hodgson.
