Rangers will look to progress in Europe at the expense of Portuguese opponents Sporting Lisbon for the third time running when the two sides clash in the second leg of their Europa League knockout tie on Thursday. As mentioned before, this is the third time Rangers and Sporting are meeting in European competition. The two times first locked horns in the erstwhile UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup four decades ago, where Rangers prevailed on the away goals rule in a controversy ridden fixture.

The second meeting between the two sides took place in the 2007/08 season, when they met in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Cup. Rangers drew 0-0 at Ibrox Park and won 2-0 at Estadio Jose Alvalade thanks to goals from Steven Whittaker and Jean Claude- Darcheville.

Curiously enough, Rangers reached the finals of the tournament on both occasions when they beat Sporting. Striker Nikica Jelavic is ineligible for Rangers, while midfielder Lee McCulloch is injured, adding to Walter Smith’s selection headache.
