The Austrian side dropped down to the Europa League after losing to Hapoel Tel Aviv in the playoff rounds of the UEFA Champions League. Salzburg lost the first leg 3-2 at home with Nikola Pokrivac and Roman Wallner netting for the hosts.

Despite their best efforts, Salzburg could only obtain a 1-1 result in Tel Aviv and were thus beaten 4-3 on aggregate by Hapoel. Salzburg reached the Round of 32 in last season’s Europa League before going out to Standard Liege.

Manchester City had little difficulty in seeing off the challenge of FC Timisoara in their last Europa League fixture. Roberto Mancini’s men won 1-0 in Romania with wonderkid Mario Balotelli netting the winner. The return leg saw the Citizens prevail 2-0 thanks to a goal in either half from Shaun Wright Phillips and Dedryck Boyata.
