Rapid beat Bulgarian side PFC Beroe Stara Zagora 4-1 on aggregate in the third qualifying round. The Austrians drew the first leg 1-1 in Sofia, but prevailed 3-0 at home thanks to a brace from Nikica Jelavic.

Croatian forward Jelavic was also the hero for Rapid when they met Villa at this stage of the competition last season. He scored the solitary goal of the game in the first leg in Vienna and then netted a crucial away one in Birmingham. Rapid lost the away tie 2-1 at Villa Park but progressed to the next round on the away goals rule.

Villa have been hit hard by the sudden resignation of Martin Neill, the manager who has led them to three consecutive sixth place finishes in the Premier League.
