Porto cruised into the last four at the expense of Spartak Moscow as they thrashed their Russian opponents 10-3 on aggregate. A 5-1 win at home was followed up with a 5-2 victory in the return leg, with Colombian striker Radamel Falcao netting four goals over both legs.

Villarreal were equally convincing in their triumph over Dutch outfit Twente Enschede. Like Porto, the Yellow Submarines all but wrapped up the tie in the first leg with a resounding 5-1 win. In the reverse leg in the Netherlands, Juan Carlos Garrido’s men triumphed 3-1 to take the tie 8-1 on aggregate.

Villarreal will also have Santi Cazorla and Nilmar back from suspension. This is only the Yellow Submarines’ second appearance in a European club competition semifinal after their loss to Arsenal in the last four of the Champions League in 2006.
