CSKA, Spartak’s domestic rivals, were eliminated 3-1 on aggregate by Porto in the Round of 16. Prior to this clash, CSKA had never beaten Porto and the Portuguese side ensured the proud record would continue as they won 1-0 away and 2-1 at home to take the tie 3-1 on aggregate.

Spartak produced one of the upsets of the previous round when they eliminated former European champions Ajax Amsterdam. Attacking midfielder Alex scored the only goal of the game when Spartak won the first leg 1-0 in the Netherlands. In Russia, Alex was on the score sheet again, with Dmitri Kombarov and Welliton also contributing as Spartak comfortably won 3-0.

Porto will start favourites as they have never lost to a Russian side in European competition and have suffered defeat only once in their last seven continental fixtures.
