PSV and Rangers have met four times before in European competition, with three games going the way of the Light Blues and one fixture ending in a goalless stalemate. The last meeting between the two sides took place over a decade back in September 1999.  Defender Wilfred Bouma is the Eredivisie outfit’s lone survivor from that clash.

Bouma helped kickstart PSV’s revival in their Round of 32 tie against Lille OSC. PSV were trailing 2-0 with less than ten minutes to go in the first leg in France, but managed to score twice to draw 2-2. In the return leg, they trailed 1-0 at half time, but were able to net thrice in the second half to win the tie 5-3 on aggregate.

Rangers beat Sporting Lisbon on the away goals rule. Goals from El Hadji Diouf and Maurice Edu allowed the Gers to draw 2-2 in Portugal after the first leg at Ibrox Park had been drawn 1-1.
