Dynamo stunned City by winning 2-0 in the first leg in Kiev. Striker Andriy Shevchenko, a former Chelsea and AC Milan forward, showed that he had not lost any of his predatory instincts when he put Kiev ahead against the run of play. Shevchenko beat City stopper Joe Hart to Andriy Yarmolenko’s left wing cross and poked home to gave Kiev the lead.

City’s form improved after the introduction of Carlos Tevez in freezing conditions in the Ukrainian capital, but instead of getting an equaliser, they went 2-0 down when Oleg Gusev scored in the 77^th minute of the game for the hosts. The result ensured the continuation of Dynamo’s 15 month unbeaten run in Europe at home.

The Citizens do have a mountain to climb but given the number of match winners they have in their lineup it would be foolish to rule out the Eastlands outfit’s chances going into the second leg.
