Manchester City could have become the first team to beat Aris in Thessaloniki since 1970 last week but Roberto Mancini’s side had to settle for a goalless draw against their Greek opponents. The best chance of the game went to City’s £27m winter signing from Wolfsburg, Edin Dzeko, who missed a sitter with the goal at his mercy.

Had the Bosnian striker converted the early opportunities that came his way, the score line could have read very differently at the final whistle. The Aris player who came closest to scoring was midfielder Darcy Neto, but City stopper Joe Hart was up to the task whenever the Brazilian decided to have a crack at the opposition goal.

An early away goal for Aris Salonika could make life very difficult for City at Eastlands. But with the plethora of attacking talent available at Roberto Mancini’s disposal, City will be favourites to advance to a next round clash against the winners of the Besiktas-Dinamo Kiev fixture.
