The last meeting between the two sides in England took place in November 2003. Liverpool, having drawn the first leg 1-1 in Bucharest, turned in an unconvincing performance at Anfield but ran out 1-0 winners thanks to Harry Kewell’s header from Steven Gerrard’s cross.

Steaua could have easily upset the Reds that night had they shown greater potency in front of goal. They also had a penalty appeal turned down for Igor Biscan’s challenge on Claudiu Raducanu.

Liverpool beat Turkish side Trabzonspor 3-1 in the playoff rounds, while Steaua needed penalties to beat Grasshopper. The two sides won 1-0 in their respective home legs, forcing the tie into a shootout. Bogdan Stancu, Romeo Surdu, Stanislav Angelov and Iasmin Latovlevici converted for Steaua as they won 4-3 in the shootout.
