Liverpool coach Roy Hodgson fielded an under strength team at Stadio San Paolo a fortnight ago but his young charges repaid his faith by frustrating the Partenopei in their own backyard.

Goalkeeper Pepe Reina, defenders Jamie Carragher, Martin Skrtel and Paul Konchesky and midfielder Christian Poulsen were the only first team regulars to feature against Napoli on Match Day 3. Young Jonjo Shelvey made his maiden European appearance for Liverpool while Hodgson also gave the likes of Martin Kelly and Jay Spearing a run out.

Napoli dominated the game as expected but were not able to carve out too many clear cut chances. Slovakian international Marek Hamsik had the best opportunity of the first half for the Partenopei, but his goal bound shot was cleared off the line by Konchesky.
