Continental heavyweights Benfica and PSV Eindhoven will meet in European competition after a gap of nearly thirteen years when they lock horns in the quarterfinals of the Europa League on Thursday. Benfica narrowly edged out French outfit Paris Saint-Germain in the previous round of the competition. In the first leg in Lisbon, goals from Maxi Pereira and Franco Jara gave Porto a comeback win after Peguy Luyindula had put PSG ahead. The return leg at Parc des Princes ended in a 1-1 draw, thus allowing Benfica to progress 3-2 on aggregate.

PSV Eindhoven progressed to the quarterfinals at the expense of Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers. The two sides played out a goalless stalemate in the first leg in Eindhoven but PSV progressed thanks to a solitary Jeremain Lens goal in the second leg at the Ibrox stadium.

The last meeting between Benfica and PSV, which took place in Lisbon in September 1998, saw the Eagles prevail 2-1. In the five meetings between the two sides till date, PSV and Benfica have won one apiece, with three fixtures ending in draws.
