Leverkusen were too strong for Metalist Kharkiv in the previous round. Jupp Heynckes’ side won the first leg 4-0 in Kharkiv with Sidney Sam netting a late brace. They then completed the formalities in the return leg at the BayArena as goals from Simon Rolfes and Michael Ballack gave them a 6-0 win on aggregate.

Villarreal were made to work harder for their win over SSC Napoli in the Round of 32. The Yellow Submarines drew the first leg 0-0 in Italy. They then went behind at El Madrigal in the reverse when Marek Hamsik scored for Napoli, but goals from Nilmar and Giuseppe Rossi sealed a 2-1 comeback win.

Villarreal, who will playing their 101^st UEFA club competition on Thursday, were eliminated from the Europa League last season by German opposition in the form of VFL Wolfsburg. This is the first meeting between Villarreal and Leverkusen in Europe.
