After seeing their dreams of Champions League football destroyed by Scandinavian neighbours Copenhagen, Norwegian outfit Rosenborg will be seen in action for the first time in this season’s Europa League when they meet Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday. Leverkusen thrashed Ukrainian outfit Tavriya Simferopol 6-1 in the playoff rounds. The Bundesliga side scored three goals in both legs as they comfortably booked their place in the group stages. Five of the six goals they scored against Tavriya came in the second half.

In Germany, Leverkusen triumphed 3-0 thanks to Michal Kadlec’s brace and Michael Ballack’s late penalty. Arturo Vidal, Denys Holaydo and Gonzalo Castro were on target for the Werkself in the reverse fixture in Simferopol, giving them a 3-1 win after Tavriya had taken an early lead through Lucky Idahor.

As mentioned before, Rosenborg were pitted against FC Copenhagen in the playoff round of the Champions League. The Norwegians were leading 2-0 in the first leg thanks to goals from Steffen Iversen and Markus Henriksen before Jesper Gronkjaer snatched a crucial away goal for FCK. Copenhagen prevailed 1-0 at home, thus eliminating Rosenborg on the away goals rule.
