Anderlecht edged out AEK Athens to second place in Group G behind Russian powerhouse Zenit St.Petersburg. The Belgians started shakily as they lost their opening games to Zenit and Hajduk but got points when it mattered the most and managed to qualify ahead of AEK thanks to their superior head to head record against the Greek side.

Anderlecht have a wonderful record at home against Dutch opposition. They have emerged victors on four of the five times they have hosted teams from the Netherlands. Ajax are the only Dutch team to have come away with a point from Brussels in European competition.

Ajax dropped into the Europa League after failing to progress from the group stages of the Champions League. They failed to qualify from a tough group that also included Real Madrid and AC Milan and finished their group engagements with seven points from six games.
