United manager Peter Houston made one change to the side that had faced St.Mirren in the Scottish Premier League, opting for Keith Watson in place of Darren Dodds in his 4-1-4-1 formation.

The sell out home crowd at Tannadice were silenced in the 11^th minute of the game when Algerian forward Rafik Djebbour scored what was to be the only goal of the game. Djebbour converted Ignacio Scocco’s cross to grab a vital away goal for AEK Athens.

Pereira Leonardo had more opportunities to add to AEK’s lead after the interval, but fortunately for Dundee United, the Greek giants did not add to Scocco’s opener.

United’s Craig Conway was marked out of the game by AEK, and sole striker Jon Daly cut a forlorn figure upfront. Their midfielders struggled for possession in the centre of the park, and will have to come up with a far more assured display in Athens if they are to have any hopes of progressing to the next round.
