Portugal are in dire straits as coach Carlos Queiroz has received a six-month suspension for misconduct towards drug testers in the world cup. Star player and skipper Cristiano Ronaldo is out of the qualifiers with an ankle injury leaving Portugal as a rudderless ship. Ricardo Quaresma has been called up to replace Ronaldo. Portugal open their campaign with a home game against Cyprus on Friday.

Norway will be without striker John Carew when they play Iceland on Friday and Portugal on Tuesday. The Aston Villa forward is out with a knee problem and had also missed last month's friendly against France for the same reason. Mohammed Abdellaoue and Daniel Braaten are expected to lead the attack in his absence.

In a group that also has Denmark, Norway need to ensure that they get off to a good start in order to avoid problems later in the qualifying rounds.
