England will be hoping to banish a disappointing World Cup campaign with a comfortable victory over Bulgaria when the two teams meet in their opening Euro 2012 qualifying match on Friday. Much was expected of England during the World Cup but Fabio Capello’s side failed to kickstart their campaign and ultimately bowed out following a 4-0 thrashing by Germany in the first knockout round. Though Capello has managed to keep his job, the Italian coach will be aware that anything less than a comfortable passage to the European Championship will see him get the sack even before the tournament starts.

Capello has rung up the changes though the core of his side remains the same. Jermain Defoe and Peter Crouch have been called up after being dropped for the friendly against Hungary while Matthew Upson has been handed another chance to impress.

England will be without their two first choice defenders with Rio Ferdinand and John Terry both missing out due to injuries which could mean a start for Upson along with Michael Dawson or Gary Cahill. Frank Lampard and Bobby Zamora also miss out due to injuries while Jack Wilshere has been dropped. Adam Johnson is expected to start the game after impressing against Hungary.
