Zenit St Petersburg will be hoping to take a big step towards booking their place in the group stages of the Champions League for a second time in three years when they take on Auxerre in their playoff round clash on Tuesday. The Russian side’s only appearance in the group stage of the competition came during the 2008-09 season when they finished a disappointing third behind Juventus and Real Madrid. Coach Luciano Spalletti will be hoping to improve on that record but will be aware that his side will have to put up a vastly improved display against Auxerre if they are to progress to the next stage.

Zenit’s third place finish in the league last season saw them enter this season’s tournament in the third qualifying stage where they almost suffered an embarrassing exit against Unirea Urziceni only for Danny to score the only goal of the round midway through the first half in the second leg.

Auxerre on the other hand qualified directly to the playoff round after coming third in Ligue 1 last season and coach Jean Fernandez will be hoping to build on that excellent campaign by helping his side qualify for only their third group stage campaign.
