Sampdoria will be hoping that their first Champions League appearance in nearly two decades will prove to be a successful one when they take on Werder Bremen in the first leg of their playoff round clash on Wednesday. The Italian side last made it this far in the Champions League back in 1992 but an excellent run of form last season saw them finish fifth in the Serie A. Manager Domenico Di Carlo will be hoping to build on that campaign by qualifying to the group stages of the competition but will be aware that his side will have to be at their best if they are to see off the challenge posed by Bremen.
