Spurs were thrashed 4-0 at the Bernabeu last Tuesday, although the score line was a tad flattering to Real Madrid at the end. Tottenham suffered a blow just prior to the game when pacy winger Aaron Lennon pulled out due to illness and things went from bad to worse when they conceded an early goal and also had Peter Crouch sent off.

To their credit Tottenham fought on with ten men but the killer blow came when Emmanuel Adebayor produced an excellent header to put Real 2-0 ahead. An imperious strike from Argentine winger Angel di Maria saw the scoreline go 3-0 in Real’s favour and Spurs’ forgettable night came to an end when a mistake from keeper Heurelho Gomes allowed Cristiano Ronaldo to snatch a fourth for Jose Mourinho’s side.

Crouch is therefore suspended for the return leg. Spurs will be aiming to take inspiration from the 4-0 thrashing Liverpool dished out to Real when Los Blancos visited Anfield two years ago.
