The Portuguese champions kicked off their European campaign in a convincing fashion as goals from Luisao and Oscar Cardozo helped them secure a comfortable 2-0 win over minnows Hapoel Tel Aviv in their first group stage match. Coach Jorge Jesus was pleased with his side’s performance and will be hoping for another good display against Schalke as he looks to avoid his side’s poor start to the domestic campaign being reflected on the European stage.

Schalke on the other hand will be disappointed that their good performance against Lyon proved to be in vain as a Michel Bastos goal midway through the first half was enough for the French club to claim all three points from the game.

Manager Felix Magath will be hopeful that his side can shrug off a disastrous start to the new season and a morale boosting victory against Benfica will prove to be the turning point for what is quickly looking like one of the worst seasons for the club in its recent history.
