The Italian side are off to a disappointing start in the domestic league and their poor form threatened to spill on to the European stage after Roma put up another poor performance in their first group stage match against Bayern Munich.

However Claudio Ranieri’s side recovered against Cluj in their next game and secured a vital 2-1 win to pull level on points with the Romanian side. With Cluj expected to face difficult time against Bayern in their next two games, Ranieri will be keen to pull clear of their nearest rivals by collecting maximum points from their double header against Basel.

The Swiss champions are at the bottom of the group table after losing their first two games even though they put up some good performances. While a poor first half was responsible for their defeat against Cluj in their opening game, Basel were unlucky to lose out against Bayern who grabbed all three points thanks to a last minute goal by Bastien Schweinsteiger.

Thorsten Fink will be optimistic that his side can improve on their excellent performance at the Stadio Olimpico with Basel coming very close to collecting a point against Roma last season.
