The Spanish giants have failed to progress past the knockout stage of the competition in their last six campaigns, a poor record that has proved to be the undoing of a number of respected coaches in European football. Madrid will be hoping that they have finally got the right manager following the appointment of Jose Mourinho this summer with the Portuguese coach becoming only the third manager to lift the trophy with two different clubs last season.

The Madrid coach will be aware that he has a difficult task at hand if he is to qualify out of the group with AC Milan providing the challenge along with Ajax and Auxerre. However Mourinho has a good record against Ajax coach Martin Jol, beating Jol’s Tottenham Hotspur five times in seven occasions that they played against a Mourinho managed Chelsea in the Premier League.

This will be Jol’s first ever Champions League campaign after twice coming close to finishing fourth in the Premier League. Ajax entered the competition during the third qualifying round and almost suffered a humiliating exit against PAOK before another close encounter against Dynamo Kiev in the play-off round.
