This will be Marseille’s fourth successive appearance in the group stages of the competition and the French club has failed to progress to the knockout stage in each of their last three appearances. One of the major reasons for Marseille’s disappointing display in the competition has been their poor home form with the club winning just three and losing four of their nine home games in the previous three seasons.

Coach Didier Deschamps will be looking to improve on that disappointing record and will be aware that a kind draw has handed his side its best chance of progressing to the knockout stage with Chelsea and Slovakian side Zilina making up the other two members in the group.

Meanwhile Spartak Moscow will be looking to improve on their disappointing record on French soil that has seen them lost nine of their 10 games in the competition so far. The Russian side last took on Marseille during the Round of 32 clash in the UEFA Cup back in 2007-08 season with Marseille winning 3-0 on home soil and progressing to the next round in spite of losing in the second leg.
