The French giants progressed all the way to the semi finals of the competition last season before losing out to Bayern Munich and coach Claude Puel will be looking to repeat that achievement this time around. Lyon have been placed in a fairly easy group with Israeli side Hapoel Tel Aviv and a depleted Benfica side making up the other two members.

Lyon have managed to qualify out of their group stage in each of their last seven appearances in the competition and with his side off to a poor start in the domestic league, Puel will be keen to make sure that Lyon get off to a winning start against a side that has not played in the competition in the last two years. 

Meanwhile Schalke will be hoping that their fourth appearance in the competition will start with a victory having lost all of their opening games in their previous three Champions League campaign. A poor form in the final part of the last season saw Schalke miss out on the league title and coach Felix Magath will be hoping for a strong run in Europe complement another title challenge in the Bundesliga.
