Hapoel Tel Aviv go into their final Champions League group stage match against Lyon with a great chance of upsetting the odds and extending their European campaign by finishing third in their group table. The Israeli champions were tipped to be the whipping boys in the group and while they fulfilled those expectations by losing out their opening three games, four points from their last two games has seen the club emerge as a serious contender for the third spot and a place in the Europa League.

Hapoel secured a shock 3-0 win over Benfica last weekend to pull within two points of the Portuguese champions. Eran Zahavi opened the scoring for the hosts early in the first half and with Benfica pressing forward for a late equalizer, Douglas da Silva doubled the lead before Zahavi completed the rout in the final minute of the game.

Lyon on the other hand go into the game on back of two successive defeats. The French giants suffered a narrow 4-3 defeat to Benfica and followed it up with a poor display against Schalke who secured a comfortable 3-0 win.

However Benfica’s shock defeat to Hapoel means that Lyon have already qualified to the next round though coach Claude Puel will be looking to finish the group stage at the top of the group table.
