This fixture is a repeat of the 1997 UEFA Cup final contested by the two teams. In that final, both sides won 1-0 at home, leading to the contest going to penalties at the San Siro, which Schalke won 4-1. Inter’s long serving Argentine midfielder Javier Zanetti is the only surviving player from either side.

Inter, as mentioned before, produced an excellent rearguard performance to knock Bayern Munich out on the away goals rule in the previous round. Despite losing the first leg 1-0 at home and trailing 2-1 away, Inter showed great spirit to clinch the tie 3-2 and eliminate Bayern on away goals.

Schalke drew 1-1 with Valencia away from home and beat Los Che 3-1 in Gelsenkirchen to progress 4-2 on aggregate. Peruvian forward Jefferson Farfan scored twice in the home leg for Schalke, including one stunning free kick.
