A thrilling victory over Lyon in their last match put Benfica right in contention to progress to the knockout stages after a disappointing start to their European campaign. A brace by Fabio Coentrao and a goal each by Javi Garcia and Alan Kardec looked to have wrapped up the victory for Benfica but Lyon almost staged an amazing comeback in the second half as goals from Yoann Gourcuff, Bafetimbi Gomis and Dejan Lovren pulled Lyon just a goal away from collecting a point from the game.

The victory saw Benfica move just one point behind Schalke in the race for the second qualification spot and the Portuguese champions could move to second in the group table if they beat Hapoel and Schalke fail to collect all three points against Lyon.

Benfica coach Jorge Jesus will be confident of securing all three points in Tel Aviv having already beaten the Israeli side 2-0 in their opening group game. Luisao and Oscar Cardozo were on target for Benfica as they completed a comfortable victory in their first group match.
