The Italian side looked set for an embarrassing exit in the group stages of the competition after managing to collect just three points from their opening three games but a vital win over Basel was followed by another brilliant comeback against Bayern Munich which saw Roma open up a three point lead over the Swiss champions in the race for the second qualifying spot.

Bayern had raced to a two goal lead by the half time whistle thanks to a brace by Mario Gomez but Roma fought back in the second half to pull level through goals from Marco Borriello and Daniele De Rossi before Francesco Totti scored a late winner from the penalty spot.

Meanwhile CFR Cluj will be hoping to end their group stage campaign as they had started it by collecting three more points in front of their home fans. The Romanian side started the group stage with a shock win over Basel but since then have lost their last four games to finish at the bottom of the group table.
