Benfica will be looking to put behind a disappointing start to their league campaign by securing a morale boosting victory over Israeli side Hapoel Tel Aviv when the two teams meet in their opening Champions League group stage match on Tuesday. The Portuguese champions are appearing in their sixth Champions League campaign and while they were the team to beat last season, a number of departures in the summer transfer window means that coach Jorge Jesus has a big task on hand if he is to successfully lead Benfica through to the knockout stages of the competition.

Meanwhile Hapoel Tel Aviv will be hoping to become the first team from Israel to progress to the knockout stages of the Champions League. This will be Hapoel’s first appearance in the group stages of the competition and coach Eli Guttman will be optimistic of another strong run on the European stage after making it to the Round of 32 in the Europa League last season.

Both the teams will be meeting each other for the first time on the European stage though Benfica have had the experience of playing against an Israeli opposition, securing a thumping 8-4 aggregate win over Beitar Jerusalem back in 1998-99 season.
