The German champions won a number of admirers for their attacking football last season but came up short against a superbly organized Inter Milan defense, ultimately losing out 2-0 in the final. However manager Louis Van Gaal will be hoping to put behind the disappointment of missing out on the trophy by going on another strong run in the competition in what could prove to be his final year at the club.

However Bayern have a good record against Roma, winning both the legs during the Cup Winners' Cup quarter-finals back in 1985.

Meanwhile Roma will be returning to the competition after missing out last season. However the Italian side have a woeful record in Germany, winning just two and losing eight games on German soil. With his side off to a disappointing start to the new season, coach Claudio Ranieri will be hoping to provide some fresh impetus for his side by collecting all three points on Wednesday.
