The German champions started their European campaign with a comfortable 2-0 victory over AS Roma with Thomas Muller and Miroslav Klose scoring the goals in the final 11 minutes of the game. Manager Louis Van Gaal will be disappointed that his side was unable to build on their superiority with Munich missing a number of chances before Muller finally broke the deadlock.

Meanwhile Basel coach Thorsten Fink will be hopeful that his side will maintain their excellent home form that has seen them win seven of their last eight European games at St Jakob-Park. A defeat in their opening group stage match against Cluj means that Basel start the game at the bottom of the group and while his side is not expected to put up a challenge for the top two spots, Fink will be optimistic that they will at least finish third and book a place in the Europa League.

Bayern on the other hand will be looking to shrug off an inconsistent start to the season by securing a thumping victory before the double header against Cluj. The German champions will be without Franck Ribery who injured himself during Munich’s narrow win over Hoffenheim.
