Shakhtar upset AS Roma to set up a quarterfinal meeting with tournament favourites Barcelona. The Ukrainians secured an upset 3-2 win in the first leg at the Olimpico and followed it up with a 3-0 win at home to progress 6-2 on aggregate. Shakhtar’s eventual margin of victory over the two legs, four goals, was the highest in the Round of 16.

Barcelona showed their class as they beat Premier League title contenders Arsenal in the previous round. The Catalans lost 2-1 in London but were superior to the Gunners in front of their home crowd as they picked up a 3-1 win at the Nou Camp to take the tie 4-2 on aggregate.

The last meeting between the two sides took place in the UEFA Super Cup in 2009. Barcelona prevailed 1-0 on that occasion thanks to Pedro’s extra time winner. Shakhtar however did win 3-2 on their last trip to the Nou Camp.
