Barcelona will be looking to make their intentions clear of lifting the Champions League trophy for a second time in three years with a comfortable victory over minnows Panathinaikos when the two teams meet in their opening group stage match on Tuesday. The Catalan giants were denied a place in a second successive final appearance by some excellent counter attacking football by eventual winners Inter Milan though the Spanish champions’ reaction of being dumped out of the competition left much to be desired.

Barcelona are off to their customary goal scoring start to the new season, thumping Racing Santander 3-0 in their first match of the new season. Having overseen a couple of key introductions to the personnel in the summer, coach Josep Guardiola will be keen to repeat their display from 2008-09 season and lift their fourth Champions League trophy this season.

They take on a Panathinaikos side that has lost both of its matches at Camp Nou on their previous two visits. Both the teams last met during the 2005-06 group stages with Barcelona thrashing the Greek side 5-0 while Panathinaikos also lost the second leg of their quarter final clash back in 2001-02 season.

New signing Javier Mascherano is expected to start the game ahead of Sergio Busquets while Panathinaikos will be hoping that the experience of Djibril Cisse and Sidney Govou will help them avoid another heavy defeat this time around.
