The Hammers secured an unexpected away win against Sunderland to book their place in the fourth round of the Carling Cup. It was the visitors’ first win on the road in more than a year and was set up thanks to their striking duo of Frederic Piquionne and Victor Obinna.

Obinna set up Piquionne for West Ham’s 35^th minute opener in that game and himself scored the second just before the hour mark. The victory against Sunderland was the first time that the East Londoners had knocked a fellow Premier League side out of the League Cup since 1997.

Stoke overcame Fulham 2-0 in the third round of the Cup. Danny Higginbotham’s header from a corner put the Potters ahead midway through the first half and they sealed victory when Kenwyne Jones nodded in Rory Delap’s throw in with eleven minutes to go.
