Sunderland had a comfortable outing in the second round, overcoming Colchester United by a 2-0 margin, thanks to a brace from Darren Bent. Boss Steve Bruce will be aware that although West Ham are facing issues related to poor form, they can bounce back strongly.

Bruce will also hope his side can better last season's showing when they went out in the fourth round losing 3-1 to Aston Villa on penalties.

Meanwhile West Ham are a club in crisis having lost all four of their premier league games so far. In the League Cup, they have fared slightly better, beating Oxford 1-0 to progress through to the third round. A lone goal from Scott Parker helped the Hammers win that game. Manager Avram Grant will hope his side can put away their starting trouble behind them and register a comprehensive win in this game. Last season, the Hammers were beaten 3-1 after extra time by Bolton at the same stage.
