Pompey made it to the third round after a 4-3 win over Crustal Palace in a penalty shootout. The teams were locked at 1-1 at the end of regulation time and extra time. Both sides missed penalties during the shootout, but Richard Hughes scored the decisive one to seal a win for Portsmouth.

Meanwhile Leicester came from behind to clinch a 2-1 win over Leeds United in the second round. Davide Somma had put Leeds ahead, but goals from Richie Wellens and Steve Howard saw them through. Leicester manager Paulo Sousa will hope to take advantage of a poor start to the season by Pompey and ensure progress through to the next round.

Last season, Portsmouth lost 2-4 to Aston Villa in the fifth round, while Leicester went out in the second round following a 2- 1 loss to Preston North End.
