The Reds have struggled for form in the league this season, managing just one win from their opening four games to fall seven points behind league leaders Chelsea at the top of the table. Liverpool’s poor start to the season has raised questions over their ability to pose a serious challenge for the league title while fans fear that their club could also fall out of the race for a top four finish should they fail to turn their form around sooner rather than later.

However Roy Hodgson’s side have been impressive on the European stage, winning all of their five Europa League games in a comfortable fashion. While the Liverpool manager is expected to give some of his younger players a chance to shine, Hodgson will be aware that the competition represents Liverpool’s best chance of lifting a trophy this season.

Northampton on the other hand will be looking to enjoy the occasion of playing at the Anfield Stadium though manager Ian Sampson will be keen to take advantage of any complacency shown by Liverpool on Wednesday.
