West Ham manager Avram Grant will be hoping to repay the vote of confidence given by his board by leading his side to their first final of a major trophy in five years when they take on Birmingham City in the second leg of their Carling Cup match on Wednesday. Though West Ham go into the match on the back of a narrow 2-1 win in the first leg, it is Birmingham who hold the advantage thanks to the away goal scored by Liam Ridgewell after Mark Noble had put the Hammers ahead early in the first half.

However in spite of being reduced to 10 men following the dismissal of Victor Obinna, West Ham fought back to claim the victory through Carlton Cole in the 77th minute which potentially could have saved Grant’s job after he was tipped to be sacked by the end of the week.

With Martin O’Neill pulling himself out of contention, the West Ham board publicly backed their manager and revealed that they are drawing up a list of potential additions to the squad before the transfer window shuts down.

Grant will be optimistic that his side can maintain the determination that saw them secure the victory against all odds and will be confident of booking a place in a cup final for a second successive season.
