Burnley beat Lancashire rivals Bolton Wanderers 1-0 in the third round of the competition. Bolton, coached by former Clarets boss Owen Coyle, lost at Turf Moor as Wade Elliott volleyed home what was to be the winner just before half time.

The Midlands outfit’s equaliser came just before the hour mark through striker Emile Heskey, who made an immediate impact after coming off the bench. Pacy winger Ashley Young then netted twice in the space of two minutes to complete a fine comeback win for Gerard Houllier’s men.
