Both the teams had met in the third place play off after narrowly losing their semi final games with Japan emerging triumphant thanks to a penalty shootout after both the teams failed to break the deadlock in extra time.

Japan sneaked through to the semi final with a thrilling victory over Qatar. The hosts had twice taken the lead only for Japan to equalize on both occasions before Masahiko Inoha grabbed an injury time winner.

South Korea on the other hand had to rely on an extra time winner by Yoon Bit-Garam after their quarter final clash had ended in a stalemate during normal time.
