Zenit St. Petersburg go into the second leg of their UEFA Cup quarter final clash knowing that only a horrible performance at the Petrovsky Stadium will prevent them from qualifying for the semi final over Bayer Leverkusen.

A brilliant performance at the BayArena in the first leg saw Zenit thrash Leverkusen 4-1 to have all but confirmed their participation in the semi finals. Zenit had taken the lead through Andrei Arshavin but a Stefan Kiessling pulled Leverkusen back on level terms.

However three goals in 12 minutes early in the second half saw Pavel Pogrebnyak, Aleksandr Anyukov and Igor Denisov hit the back of the net and put Zenit in a very strong position ahead of the second leg. It was Leverkusen's worst home defeat in a European competition after the club lost 3-0 to Osasuna at the same stage last season.

Leverkusen will have to put up their best performance of the season if they are to have any hopes of overturning the deficit and qualify for the semi finals. However their record against Russian sides is poor with Leverkusen winning just one and losing the other four. Leverkusen are yet to win a match on Russian soil, losing both the games against Spartak Moscow.

However they can gain some confidence after seeing Zenit's poor home record against German teams. Of their previous three home games, Zenit have managed just one win and lost two matches against German opposition.
