Zambia currently have four points from as many games in Group C. They are three points behind Egypt, and six points behind leaders Algeria. The Chipolopolo lost their last qualifying game 1-0 to Algeria. Rafik Saifi’s second half goal was all that separated Zambia from the Desert Foxes at the end.

The two losses to Algeria have certainly hit Zambia hard, but coach Herve Renard knows that his side are still in with a slim chance of qualifying. Also a win against Egypt, coupled with Algeria avoiding defeat against minnows Rwanda, will confirm Zambia’s presence at the 2010 African Cup of Nations.

Egypt themselves have a mountain to climb. A draw against Zambia at home, and an away loss to Algeria means that the fate of Hasan Shehata’s men does not rest in their own hands. Should Algeria beat Rwanda at home as expected, failure on Egypt’s part to beat Zambia will end their hopes of qualifying.

Egypt warmed up for the game with a fine 4-0 friendly win over Mauritius. Mohamed Aboutrika netted a brace, with skipper Ahmed Hassan and former Wigan striker Amr Zaki also scoring. Midfielder Mohamed Shawky is suspended, while strikers Mohamed Zidan and Mido have not been called up to the squad by Shehata. Mahmoud Fatallah and Emad Moteab will miss this clash as they are injured.
