The Rojiblancos moved out of the relegation zone last week after beating Espanyol 4-0 thanks to a brace from Sergio Aguerro and goals from Diego Forlan and Maxi Rodriguez. Atletico have had a miserable start to the season, but finally showed their mettle last Sunday.

The win was the first since new boss Quique Sanchez Flores replaced Abel Resino three games ago. Atletico are now 17th on the La Liga table with 10 points from 12 games. Their season looks to have been turned around, but much will depend on strikers Aguerro and Forlan who have attracted interest from Premier League teams like Chelsea and Tottenham respectively. Aguerro has said he will not move in January though he could do so in the summer.

Meanwhile Xerez are finding life tough in the top flight and are at the bottom of the table having collected just 7 points from 12 games. In a mid-week clash against Barcelona, Xerez slumped to a 2-0 loss thanks to goals from Thierry Henry and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Xerez coach Jose Angel Ziganda will be aware that his side could prove to be cannon fodder for a rejuvenated Atletico side, but insists they can turn their season around. The club has won just one game since being promoted to the La Liga this season.
